Bedtime battles? Here's what to say tonight.
Every night the same fight to get into bed, and you have tried everything. RootWise gives you the words for the moment it tips over, word for word.

Sound familiar?
- "One more story", then water, then the bathroom, then one more hug.
- By 9 pm your patience is gone, and the evening still isn't yours.
- You wonder whether you're too strict or too soft.
"One more story" usually means "I'm not ready to let you go yet". The boundary holds, and the goodbye can get easier.

The script for bedtime
Scenario
Child is screaming, crying, or having a full tantrum when it's time for bed.
Ages 2 to 8 years
Validation and Boundary
Bedtime Meltdown · intermediate · 5 to 10 minutes
What to say
- 1
You're really upset about bedtime. I can see this is hard for you.
- 2
AND bedtime is still happening. You need your sleep to feel good tomorrow.
- 3
Do you want to walk to your room or should I carry you?
- 4
I'm here for you while you have these big feelings.
Why it works
Acknowledging the child's emotions while maintaining the boundary shows them their feelings are valid, but the expectation remains. Offering choices gives them control within your structure.
The line for you, when you're about to lose it
This is temporary. Their big feelings don't mean I'm doing something wrong. Consistency is kindness.
One of 36 scripts, three approaches per scenario, plus what helps before it tips over. The monster under the bed has a script of its own. All free in the app.
And when it doesn't go by the script?
Then you describe what happens at your house in the evening and get an answer for your child and their age. Even at 9:40 pm, when they come out of the room for the fifth time.
Mia (3) gets out of bed five times every night. What do I say?
Summary
Mia probably isn't testing your patience on purpose: at three, many kids find it hard to switch from closeness and activity to sleep. What matters is staying calm, saying little, and reacting the same way every time. A long discussion at night works like extra attention and keeps her awake.
What to do
- Prevent: Before lights out, drink water together, go to the bathroom, snuggle, and settle one last question: "Is there anything else your body needs?"
- One clear line: Once, calmly: "It's bedtime now. You're safe, and I'll help you stay in your bed."
- When she gets up: Walk her back without a discussion, the same line every time: "Bedtime. I'm right next door."
- A small choice: "Door open a little or closed tonight? You decide."
